La
bandiera dell’Unione Europea: un simbolo di pace.
Le stelle non
rappresentano gli stati dell’Unione: si ispirano alla corona di dodici stelle sul
capo della donna dell’Apocalisse [ «Un segno grandioso apparve nel cielo: una
donna che sembrava vestita di sole, con una corona di dodici stelle in capo, e
la luna sotto i suoi piedi» (Ap 12,1].
L’azzurro è tradizionalmente un colore mariano. L’autore del bozzetto per la
bandiera fu il francese, cattolico, Arséne Heitz.
L’inno dell’Unione Europea è l’Ode alla gioia / An die freude, tratto dal movimento finale delle 9° Sinfonia
di Ludwig van Beethoven. Le parole dell’inno cantate nella sinfonia sono del
poeta Johann Christoph
Friedrich von Schiller:
«Gioia, bella scintilla divina,
figlia dell'Eliseo,
noi entriamo ebbri e frementi,
o celeste, nel tuo tempio.
Il tuo incanto rende unito
ciò che il costume dei tempi rigidamente separò,

Le nazioni affratellate nell’Unione Europea
ripudiarono la loro passata potenza imperialista, alla quale ancora tendono
orgogliosamente ma vanamente (vanità delle vanità, essa è tutta vanità, come è
scritto) tanti altri nel mondo, e
vollero creare una potenza di pace. Un’impresa mai tentata prima d’ora nella
storia dell’umanità.
The flag of the
European Union: a symbol of peace.
The
stars do not represent the states of the Union: they are inspired by the crown
of twelve stars on the head of the woman of the Apocalypse [«A
great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars»(Rev
12: 1)]. Blue is traditionally a Marian color. The author of the sketch for the

The anthem of the
European Union is the Ode to the joy / An die freude, taken from the final
movement of the 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. The words of the hymn

The nations
fraternized in the European Union repudiated their past imperialist power, to
which so many others still tend proudly but in vain (vanity of vanities, it is
all vanity, as it is written) in the
world, and wanted to create a power of peace. An enterprise never attempted
before in human history.
